You can create different types of views modes. Navigate to admin/structure/display-modes
If you click on View modes you can see the default view modes for content and custom blocks. You can even make your own.
A common view mode is "teaser."
You can manage each view mode by content type and use the same view mode across multiple content types.
You can create your own view modes and add the view mode to each content type
